Significance of Umrah for Muslims

Umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah that Muslims can perform at any time of the year, outside the days of Hajj. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed Umrah 4 times and encouraged Muslims to alternate between Hajj and Umrah, because Umrah removes sins and poverty.

Umrah consists of 4 rituals performed in order: entering Ihram at the Miqat, Tawaf (circling the Holy Kaaba 7 times), Sa'i (walking between Safa and Marwa 7 times), and Halq or Taqsir (shaving or trimming the hair). A healthy pilgrim completes Umrah in 4 to 6 hours.

The reward for Umrah in Ramadan equals the reward of Hajj, according to a hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Ramadan Umrah does not replace the obligatory Hajj.

Why Is Saudi Arabia Sacred for Muslims?

Saudi Arabia contains Makkah and Madinah, the 2 holiest cities in Islam. Makkah is the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and home to the Holy Kaaba, the direction towards which Muslims pray 5 times a day.

Madinah is where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established the first Muslim community and is his burial place at Masjid an-Nabawi. The distance between Makkah and Madinah is approximately 450 kilometres, covered in about 2 hours 30 minutes on the Haramain High-Speed Railway.
